Frequently Asked Questions
What should I look for when choosing a new dentist?
When searching for your new dentist, you should evaluate their qualifications, experience, and how comfortable you feel in their office. You should also check if their office provides financial assistance. Always make sure to find a dental team that makes each visit comfortable.
Are there any questions I should ask my new dentist?
When choosing a new dentist, there are a few questions that are important to ask, including:
- How long has the dentist been in practice?
- How long will it take to get an appointment?
- What kind of dental technology does the dentist use?
- Does the dental practice accept your dental insurance?
- Does the dentist take continuing education courses and stay up to date on the latest dental techniques?
How can a dentist help with my sleep apnea?
A dentist with a focus on dental sleep medicine can help with sleep apnea by providing oral appliance therapy, which involves creating and fitting a custom-made oral appliance that helps keep the airway open during sleep. Oral appliances are designed to be comfortable and easy to wear.
The appliances work by positioning the jaw in a slightly forward position to prevent the collapse of soft tissues in the throat that can block the airway. This treatment can be an alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, especially for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea.
Can a dentist work with my primary care physician or sleep specialist to develop a comprehensive treatment plan?
Yes, a sleep apnea dentist can work with your primary care physician or sleep specialist. A collaborative approach involving multiple healthcare professionals can provide a customized treatment plan that addresses each patient’s needs.
The dentist can create a custom oral appliance, while your primary care physician or sleep specialist may guide other treatments or lifestyle changes. By working together, your healthcare team can monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed to ensure that you’re getting the best possible care for your sleep apnea.
